Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to recognize architecture as a meaningful element that is treated, constructed and interpreted differently based on the prevailing social and political circumstances. The respective buildings themselves react (wanted or unwanted) to these circumstances, which inevitably make them bearers of association. The aim is to strengthen the understanding of architecture as a conglomerate of influences and to subject the built environment to a new assessment.

Subject of course

Subject in winter term 2020/21:

WORLD FAIRS - time its architecture, architecture its freedom?

The architecture of the world´s EXPOs has always been at a precarious interface between innovation and technical progress on the one hand and the mediation of national identity images on the other. The historical analysis of the world exhibitions offers interesting insights into social and political contexts in architectural development and a broader understanding of various trends, styles, fashions, counter reactions etc.

The question of how physical forms, such as buildings, can express information about the societies that created them will be examined. The focus is therefore on the "expressive" role of architecture and less on the functional or structural aspects. Architectural-historical mechanisms that represent certain types of buildings, epochs or special structural phenomena are placed in context with socio-political trends.
