Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to..

  • to explain the basics of structural hydraulic engineering
  • to describe the tasks
  • to name the principles of hydropower use, irrigation, flood protection, shipping and water supply
  • to explain the energy industry, especially in Austria
  • Run-of-river power plants, storage power plants, tidal power plants, and other designs to describe
  • perform power calculations for power plants
  • to describe water intakes comprehensively
  • explain the basics of water transport routes
  • explain pressure lines
  • to conceptually record a pressure tunnel system and pressure shafts
  • to describe the tunneling
  • Explain pressure water locks
  • to describe the pressure surge process
  • to calculate the pressure wave velocity in
  • to explain the basics of pressure surge processs (water hammer)
  • to explain the basics of surge tank oscillations
  • to describe chutes
  • to explain air-entrainment in chutes
  • to describe weirs
  • dimension a stilling basin
  • explain the main components of powerhouses
  • to dimension turbines

Subject of course

In addition to the basics, the following specialist areas are dealt with, based on examples from Austria and abroad: surge chambers, pressure tunnels and pressure shafts as well as pressure pipelines; constructive solution of high head and low head power houses; shot channels, spillways and bottom outlets; Pump storage systems, weir systems and closures.

Teaching methods

COVID 19:

The lecture is held in hybris format (classroom and distance learning format). The students who have booked the LVA are provided with a link for an e-learning part of the lecture via TISS.
