Properties

  • Semester hours: 1.5
  • Credits: 1.5
  • Type: UE Exercise

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • set up a 1D numerical flow simulation for a river and to calibrate and validate it.
  • recherche available data and to implement it in the model.
  • self-organise teamwork in a small group.
  • disseminate results in an oral presentation and through a written report.

The participants are sensitized to practical problems in developing flow modes.

The repitions of model set-ups (3 models) and presentations / reports (intermedaite and final) offer excellent  learning potential.

Subject of course

The exercise is comprised of:

  • Set-up and running a 1D flow model with increasing complexity.
  • Transgfer of fundamental hydraulic knowledge into a flow model.
  • Validation and critical analyses of model results.
  • Presentation and reports of model results.
  • Team work.

Teaching methods

KW-Übung is a self-supported exercise - learning to setup a 1D flow model to be used to solve an engineering problem in a river.

The following dates require the listed actions:

Date

Action

01.09. – 06.10

Register in TISS, afterwards is from 07.10. the TUWEL course with all further information available

until 13.10.

Upload your own first HECRAS model in TUWEL. Required for continuing with the course!

14.10.

Register for the Tutorials in TUWEL, registration of the team members for the group work opened.

16. / 17.10.

HECRAS-Tutorials.  Required for continuing with the course! Otherwise you will fail the course and get deregistered.

until 21.10.

Registration of the team members for the group work. If you do not register, you will automatically be assigned to a group.

21.10.

Publication of exercises for the group work

from 21.10.

Registration for the intermediate presentation (TUWEL)

until 11.11.

Upload of your intermediate report (pdf) and HECRAS-model to TUWEL.

13. / 14.11.

Intermediate presentation.

from 18.11.

Registration for the final presentation to TUWEL.

until 09.12.

Upload of your final report (pdf) to TUWEL.

11. / 12.12.

Final presentation.

The first HECRAS model (until 13.10.) must be created independently and individually (on your own) and then uploaded to TUWEL. As a help, you will receive an exercise script that sets out all the important steps for you. You should have worked with HECRAS yourself to be prepared for the tutorial. Otherwise you will not be able to follow the contents. If no file is uploaded, you will be automatically canceled from the course.

In the tutorial, a realistic HECRAS model will be created in the PC-lab and useful features explained. The tutorial prepares you for the group processing of your task (from 21.10.). You should have worked with HECRAS yourself before. Attendacne is compulsory!

Your group will then have its own task to create another HECRAS model for a section of a river. This will be presented in the interim presentation by you. Afterwards, you will receive an advanced question that you need to work on by adjusting your model. This will be presented by you in the final presentation.

The intermediate and final presentations should be held within 10 minutes and via powerpoint. The reports to be submitted should previously be uploaded as pdf documents (maximum 10 pages), so please - no printouts! Presentation templates (ppt) and reports (docx) are provided but feel free to use your own.

Mode of examination

Immanent

Additional information

The exercise takes place ONLY in the WINTER SEMESTER, as provided in the curriculum!

Important Information for absolving the KW-Übung:

The exercise will be solved self-sustained on a computer, including model setup, data recherche, report and presentation writing.

HECRAS is freeware. To help you with installing and running HECRAS, a scriptum will be supplied. There will be no additional lectures for the KW-Übung.

Basic knowledge in hydraulics and hydraulic engineering is required and will not be repeated within the Übung.
