Feasibility of using Sentinel-1 terrain-flattened gamma naught backscatter across EO platforms

Auftragsforschungsprojekt

The Copernicus programme driven by the European Commission (EC) in cooperation with ESA, provides unprecedented volumes of free and open Earth Observation (EO) data. The Copernicus Sentinel satellites collect data in different domains for the monitoring of atmospheric, oceanic and land processes. The immense volume of data leads to difficulties in the distribution and uptake (i.e. download) of the daily generated massive amounts of satellite data (currently approx. 12 TB per day). Therefore, a paradigm shift is necessary to move the software and respective users to the data stored in a central manner at specific data centres. To address this challenge the EC established the Copernicus DIAS (Data and Information Access Service) activity. Several hubs are developed to distribute the data to the different user communities, e.g. the Sentinel data is distributed via ESA’s Collaborative Ground Segment initiative towards national stakeholders. Moreover, ESA is developing the “Network of Resources” (ResNet) within its ID#9 (“Exploitation Platform”) activity of EOEP-5 Block-4 with the idea to offer a set of interconnected services by collaborating organizations under transparent T&Cs and in agreement with the network’s charter of values. The development of the ResNet is driven by a specific Network of Resources working group lead by Cristiano Lopes within ESA’s Data Coordination Body activity. The main ResNet objectives are to foster collaboration, interoperability and mutualization of efforts for the exploitation of EO data. The activity described within this document shall contribute to the ResNet by the development of a processing workflow for improved Sentinel-1 backscatter data, providing a temporal stack of analysis ready data (ARD) that can be integrated into a data cube system allowing to access the data in a spatial and temporal domain.
