Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  1. properly measure current and voltage, build differentiator and integrator circuits and measure their capacitances with an oscilloscope, as well as measure the power in three-phase systems
  2. use measurement devices in different simple circuits
  3. understand the fundamental principles of power electronics and use an oscilloscope at an intermediate level
  4. understand induction and DC machines at a basic level
  5. determine the basic function of digital and analog circuits and define their operational behavior.

Subject of course

Current, voltage, power, resistance measurement in d.c., a.c. and three phase circuits, measurements of electrical and non-electrical quantities, utilization of oscilloscopes, examination of rectifier circuits and DC-to-DC converter, operational behaviour and variable speed drives of d.c. and induction machines, examination of electronical circuits, sensors and digital technique.

Additional information

The laboratory exercise is split into multiple parts, where each part has mandatory attendance. Non-attendance will result in a failing grade of the course.

Each laboratory exercise part includes a preparation for the relevant topics required to perform all operations and measurements of the respective exercise. It is also used to check the required linguistic skills in German or English. If the laboratory instructor does not approve with the shown results, he/she has the right to exclude the student from the laboratory exercise to minimize the safety risk for all participants.

Examination modalities

  • Attendance at all four preliminary discussions is strongly recommended, where an introduction to every laboratory exercise will be given.
  • The laboratory exercise will be split into five parts, each part has mandatory attendance and in total 4 of 5 parts need to be passed for a positive grade on the laboratory exercise.
  • If a laboratory exercise cannot be attended due to sickness, a medical certificate is required to schedule an alternative date. In this case please write an e-mail to lehre-ieam@tuwien.ac.at.
