Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • conduct a critical appraisal of peer-reviewed scientific literature in the area of energy system analysis as well as energy and environmental economics.
  • structure and write a Bachelor-, Master- and PhD thesis as well as a scientific journal paper.
  • understand the similarities and differences between a review paper and an analytical paper.
  • give a scientific talk.
  • chair a conference session.

  • Introduction, Organization of the course
  • Overview of different types of scientific publications and scientific talks
  • Similarities and differences in the structure of different types of scientific publications
  • Instructions for structuring and writing a scientific publication (with special consideration of Bachelor/Master/PhD thesis documents and journal articles)

26 April 2024:

  • Continuation - Instructions for structuring and writing a scientific publication (with special consideration of Bachelor/Master/PhD thesis documents and journal articles)
  • Guidance on how to prepare and give a scientific talk and how to chair a conference session
  • Selection of a topic from energy/environmental systems analysis (each topic based on 1-2 proposed scientific papers of the supervising assistant)
  • Instructions for the preparation of a scientific paper as a homework and a scientific talk

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is obligatory (non-negotiable!) that a topic of the lecturers is chosen from their field of research in energy/environmental system analysis! It is not accepted to propose your own or non-related topic from another field!

May 2024:  

  • Preparation of a scientific paper as a homework
  • Bilateral exchange with the supervising assistant 

14 & 21 June 2024:

  • Oral presentation of the scientific paper in a conference session format
  • Chairing another student's talk
  • Submission of the final scientific paper

Teaching methods

  • Conduct a critical appraisal of peer-reviewed scientific literature in the area of energy and environmental economics
  • Prepare, structure, write and present scientific content
  • Discuss own and other student's scientific work with the audience
  • Chair a conference session
  • Develop suggestions for improvement/expansion of the scientific objective and method dealt with (e.g. qualified for a master's thesis topic)
