Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

- know and discuss the structure of DC- and AC- drives,

- use the space phasor calculus for transient analysis of AC-drives,

- know and discuss the basic topology and control of DC- and permanent magnet sychronous machines.

Subject of course

Structure of electric drives, simple inverter structures, DC drives (construction, steady state and dynamic behaviour), space phasor theory, basics of AC drives using permanent magnet synchronous machines (PSM), Brushless DC operation of PSMs, torque-, speed- and position controlled drives

Teaching methods

Step by step description of functional principles and system dependencies. Calculation of exercise examples.
