Subject of course

Recent Topics in Organization & Strategic Management.

There has been a hype around artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years across a wide range of industries: AI Systems are used in cyber-physical production systems and “Industry 4.0”, they are applied by e.g. public agencies and reshape criminal justice systems by using risk assessment algorithms and predictive policing. AI Systems are applied also to optimize energy use in critical infrastructure through AI-driven resource allocation, and AI systems are implemented in employment and educational systems through automated evaluation tools and matching algorithms. These are just a few application areas today and – if we trust newspapers and magazines – there are many more to come.

AI systems make machines “intelligent”, including functions like sensing, reasoning, adapting and learning, and they allow for automated decision-making. Economically, they are considered to have the potential to fundamentally disrupt existing business models as they function as prediction machines (see basic readings). The High-level Expert Group on AI of the European commission states on one of their documents, that AI is probably the most transformative technology of our time and it predicts a significant impact of AI on the society. As always with disruptive change, we are only beginning to understand the opportunities and challenges of AI and its implications for society.

Therefore, there is a growing desire to assess AI Systems and their impact. How should companies set strategies, how should governments design policies, and how should people plan their lives for a world so different from what we know now? In this seminar, we will discuss the state of the art in analysis of opportunities and challenges associated with applications of AI systems. Some of the papers focus more on fundamental questions addressing key challenges with the technology itself, other topics address issues of application and ethical considerations.
