Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • determine which types of analyses are required for Design-by-Analysis of pressure equipment.
  • perform Design-by-Analysis calculations including the necessary Finite Element calculations.
  • evaluate the results of the analyses according to appropriate standards.

Subject of course

  • Finite Element analysis and ANSYS
  • Geometry of model, linear elastic analysis, stress distribution
  • Thermal analysis, thermal stress
  • Fatigue analysis
  • Global plastic deformation check
  • Shake down analysis
  • Stability (buckling) analysis

Teaching methods

Each lecture starts with a presentation, where the required basics for the exercises are developed. Afterwards, an example is carried out within the group. A similar example has to be analysed as homework. For the exercises, the PCs of the institute are available, and participants work on PCs. Usage of students own PCs is possible.

For taking the exam, 6 exercises have to be performed and the results shown to the instructors. The grading is based on the oral exam.

At the summer semester 2020, the oral exam is online with video conferencing - details are given in TUWEL.
