Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able

  • to clearly define a self-selected problem,
  • to apply their theoretical knowledge to the chosen topic in practice,
  • to carry out independent literature research and to work out proposals for solutions.

In addition, the students should practice

  • to formulate their ideas precisely, to express constructive

criticism, as well as

  • to present their work in a lecture or in a technical report.

Subject of course

This course serves the scientific treatment of a special task in the field of mechatronics, whereby this is accomplished in small groups. The course has three main focuses. First, the procedure for researching and compiling current literature for a given technical problem is to be practiced. On the basis of the literature found students are introduced to the subject and thereby enabled to suggest possible solutions. These proposed solutions will be discussed in the group and then worked out. The conclusion takes the form of a technical report and a presentation to a technically experienced audience. The topics will be taken from current research projects.

Examples are:

  • Modelling of the flow-induced noise of ventilation systems
  • Experimental characterization of the magnetostrictive vibration behavior of electrical steel sheets
  • Modelling of acoustic loss mechanisms (porous absorbers, viscosity in MEMS structures)
  • Transfer path analysis for vehicles
  • Modelling of induction heating processes

Further possible topics arise from advertised bachelor or diploma theses.

Teaching methods

After the selection of the topics by the students, the supervision takes place in individual appointments during the semester.

Mode of examination

Immanent

Additional information

The presentation and assignment of topics will take place during the preliminary discussion - please consider the currently advertised diploma thesis topics (TISS, theses: https://tiss.tuwien.ac.at/thesis) to select topics.
