After successful completion of the course, students are able to measure the viscosities of fluids, apply Laser-Doppler anemometry and hot wire anemometry to measure velocities, make flows visible either with the Schlieren-method or on model flows such as the Hele-Shaw cell and the shallow water channel, explain the observed phenomena, and measure the drag and lift of an airfoil profile.
Application of experimental methods for typical applied problems.
The laboratory exercise is organized in units of 4 hours each on the following topics:
- Measurement of Fluid Properties (viscosimetry)
- Elements of Measurement Techniques (classical optical measurement methods, free convection; shallow water channel)
- One Directional Flow Phenomena (diffusion and fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell)
- Elements of Fluid Flow Instabilities (Particle Image Velocimetry or Laser Doppler Anemometry, Taylor-Couette experiment)
- Elements of Aerodynamics (icing of a wing profile in the subsonic wind tunnel (hot wire anemometry, 6-component force balance)
At the beginning of each exercise unit the knowledge of the respective documents (lecture notes) is checked.
Protocols are written, which are to be handed in at the end of the exercise unit, but at the latest by the next exercise unit.
The marks are based on the knowledge of the lab contents, on active participation, cooperation and on the submitted reports.
