After successful completion of the course, students are able to measure and visualize flow fields and to measure fluid properties. They can describe and interprete measurements and observations and are able to document their activities.
Units of 4 hours each on the following topics: (i) viscosimetry, (ii) classical optical measurement methods, free convection, compressible flow; shallow water channel, (iii) surface tension (pendant drop), (iv) icing of a wing profile in the subsonic wind tunnel (hot wire anemometry, 6-component force balance), (v) Particle Image Velocimetry or Laser Doppler Anemometry, (vi) diffusion and fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell.
At the beginning of each exercise unit the knowledge of the respective documents (lecture notes) is checked.
Protocols are written, which are to be handed in at the end of the exercise unit, but at the latest by the next exercise unit. Presence in each unit is necessary. Missed course units can only be taken in the next semester.
The marks are based on the knowledge of the lab contents, on active participation, cooperation and on the submitted reports.
The laboratory of the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer is located at Arsenal, Franz-Grill-Straße 9, Object 214.
