Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to solve basic numerical problems, which are relevant in many areas of mechanical engineering. This includes in particular problems of regression, solving systems of equaitions as well as the solution of eigenvalue problems. Students are introduced to the theory of the methods, but also learn their practical application both "by hand" and implemented in a computer program. Another learning objective is to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each method as well as their limitations in applicability.

Subject of course

  • Fundamentals of numerical arithmetic
  • Fundamentals of numerical linear algebra
  • Methods for the solution of nonlinear systems of equations
  • Interpolation of discrete functions
  • Approximation of discrete data
  • Eigenvalue problems

Teaching methods

All lectures are designed interactively. Theoretical explanations are accompanied by application examples. In the exercise part of the course, the theory is deepened by practical examples and the students are motivated to learn by suitable means, such as homework. Performance is assessed by means of a written examination.

Examination modalities

Performance is assessed by means of a written examination.

In consultation with the deans of studies, we have once again specified the examination mode for the course. You will be offered the following examination dates:

The first exam date has already taken place on May 17, 2023. A SUBSTITUTE TEST will be offered for this on July 7, 2023. Participation in the substitute test does not count as a further attempt. Furthermore, you have the possibility to take the final test in the winter semester 2023/24. The following dates are planned for this: 03.10.2023, 21.11.2023 and 16.01.2024. You can choose one of the dates as a regular date and the following one is the substitute test. This means, for example, if you take the exam on 03.10.2023, 21.11.2023 is the corresponding substitute test. If you took the exam in the summer and received a negative grade, you can take the exam again in the winter semester.
