Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • to give the equations of the linearized theory of elasticity in various matrix and tensor notations
  • to interpret stress and strain tensors with respect to component design
  • to explain the basic concept of (visco-) plasticity
  • to explain the basic concept of  visco-elasticity
  • to explain the basic concepts of damage and fracture mechanics
  • to explain the basic concepts of high cycle and low cycle fatigue

Subject of course

Review of continuum mechanics, interpretation of stress and strain tensor; strength
hypotheses for static loading; anistropy;viscoelasticity;design under cyclic loading
(fatigue); elasto-plasticity, damage, and failure mechanisms

Teaching methods

Power point presentation; listing and interpretation of basic equations, accompanying sketches and figures
