This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2022S, VO, 1.5h, 2.0EC, to be held in blocked form

  • Semester hours: 1.5
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Distance Learning

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • Know about the main environmental effects caused by road noise
  • To master the basic physical relationships of sound generation and sound propagation.
  • Understand experimental methods used in the laboratory as well as in the field
  • To know modern calculation and simulation methods
  • To analyze noise generation and noise propagation in automotive applications.
  • To optimize an overall system.

Subject of course

The course is based on fundamental findings from European and national research projects:
1. Environmental Conditions
2. Physical basics
3. Measurement methods: Recording technology and procedures, data analysis, post-processing and digital acoustic procedures as well as digital video recording technology
4. Experimental methods: In-car, at the test site and on the acoustic roller dynamometer
5. Parameters influencing the exterior noise: Vehicle (car, truck) - drive train (transient engine operation) - tires (tractive force, contact force, slip, temperature) - driving condition (rolling, constant, accelerated) - road surface
6. Simulation methods for the exterior noise
7. Optimization of the overall system vehicle - tires - road surface

Teaching methods

In the framework of the lecture, physical basics are introduced. The in-depth knowledge is based on the results of our own international research projects. The experimental and computational methods are discussed using practical examples.
