Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply the fundamentals of reaction technology to the exhaust gas cleaning of internal combustion engines. In the course of this course, students will learn different approaches and methods to design systems for exhaust gas purification on vehicle drives in the field of tension between legal and technical conditions.

Subject of course

Die Vorlesung gliedert sich wie folgt:

  • Gesetzliche und technische Rahmenbedingungen
  • Begriffe der Reaktionstechnik (Umsatz, Ausbeute, Selektivität, Verweilzeit…)
  • Grundlagen der Katalyse (Teilschritte, Kinetik und Reaktionsmechanismen der heterogenen Katalyse, Ansätze zur Reaktormodellierung)
  • Bauarten und Aufbau von Abgaskatalysatoren (Trägerkatalysatoren, Washcoats…)
  • Deaktivierung von Katalysatoren
  • Technologien und umgesetzte Systeme (Oxidationskatalysatoren, 3-Wege Katalysatoren Stickoxidspeicherkatalysatoren NSK, selektive katalytische Reduktion von Stickoxiden SCR…)

Teaching methods

In order to achieve the learning objectives, a mixed didactic concept, consisting of classroom instruction, exercises and current case studies is used.
