Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to contribute technical solutions and ideas shown and discussed in racing vehicle construction and racing engines to the development of concepts for future-oriented road vehicles as a major contribution to improving efficiency and reducing emissions.

Subject of course

Introduction to the history and development of motorsports, comparison of motorsporst and series with references to development priorities that apply to both series and high-performance engines, technical description and assessment of high-performance engines with and without turbocharging and their design features, history and state of the art by example of selected Formula 1 engines from 1966 - 2020.

The racing cars of Formula 1, the DTM, the WEC (Le Mans) and Formula E are specially treated based on regulations, vehicle concept, aerodynamics, safety devices, drive, transmission, chassis and brakes. Concluding with an outlook and a discussion about the future of motorsport in general.

Teaching methods

Discussion and analysis of the development of specific technologies using historically arranged case studies. From this, concepts for future motorsport and road traffic will be developed and discussed, partly in groups.

As all our written exams take place in parallel, registration for only one exam is permitted per exam date! Multiple registrations will not be tolerated! De-registrations after the registration deadline will not be considered!
