Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • Create kinematic machine models in commercial CAD/CAM environments
  • Program various additive and subtractive machining processes
  • Simulate and validate machine programs in CAD/CAM software
  • Understand concepts of different post processors to create machining code
  • Execute additive and subtractive machining programs utilizing robotic and machine tool hardware at the IFT laboratory (Science Campus Arsenal)
  • Characterize respective part quality utilizing industrial relevant measurement equipment

Subject of course

CAD/CAM system:

  • CNC systems for robotics and machine tools
  • Computer-Aided-Manufacturing systems (CAD/CAM)
  • Simulation tools for NC-Code validation
  • (Semi-)automated NC-code generation

Additive manufacturing:

  • Basics for Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing / Direct Energy Deposition (WAAM/DED) processes
  • Components and control of standard welding robot systems

Practical Exercise:

  • Part design for hybrid manufacturing (additive and subtractive)
  • Process planning for hybrid processes in selected CAD/CAM system
  • Generation and simulation of additive and subtractive robot / CNC programs
  • Part manufacturing and quality inspection at IFT TEC-Lab

The lecture is supported with commercial CAD/CAM software (Siemens NX CAD/CAM) which is available for the students in the laboratory of TU Wien IFT.

Teaching methods

The lecture is held interactively. In the theoretical part, basics of additive manufacturing as well as robot and machine programming with CAD/CAM systems are explained. In the practical part, students have the opportunity to strengthen their know how by working on hands-on examples for additive and subtractive machining. The course content will be demonstrated following a test piece throughout the manufacturing process.
