Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • Design and evaluate applications of robotic systems in manufacturing.
  • execute and describe current robot systems in manufacturing technology
  • explain and apply the basics of robot programming
  • state and contrast possible scenarios for integrating robots into manufacturing systems
  • independently methodically design and layout the vertical and horizontal integration of robotic systems in a manufacturing environment

Subject of course

  1. After an introduction to robotics, kinematics, advantages, and disadvantages, as well as specific areas of application of industrial robots and their end effectors, are presented. An overview of the safety standards for industrial robots and functional safety standards is also given.
  2. The project planning and selection process of robot systems is explained, and methods for creating a cell layout and cycle time estimation are presented. The concepts of Flexible Manufacturing Cell and Flexible Manufacturing System and the tasks of industrial robots in this context are presented.
  3. The horizontal and vertical integration of robots in manufacturing systems are presented. Virtual commissioning is addressed along the horizontal axis, and robot control, periphery, and integration into information systems along the vertical axis.
  4. One block of topics is dedicated to the programming of industrial robots using the example of the robot programming language RAPID (ABB) and introduces the basic concepts of ROS (Robot Operating System).
  5. Finally, participation in an excursion to the TU Wien Pilot Factory Industry 4.0 is offered, where the contents of the lecture are presented using the existing infrastructure (machining centers, robot systems) and can be tried out by the students.

Teaching methods

The use of robots in manufacturing will be introduced in the lecture, explained with examples, and finally demonstrated in a manufacturing environment.
