Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • describe geometrical and kinematic aspects and cutting force components of machining processes
  • calculate cutting force and power requirement
  • state characteristic attributes of cutting materials and coatings
  • explain tool wear mechanisms and wear size
  • explain advantages and disadvanteges of cooling lubrication, dry machining and minimum lubrication
  • explain basics of high speed cutting and micro machining
  • understand basics of forming and characteristic forming parameters
  • calculate selected forming processes

Subject of course

Machining:

  • technical sufaces, tolerances and requirements for machining operations
  • geometrical and kinematic aspects of machining processes
  • forces due to cutting processes
  • chiping process by standard and high speed machining processes
  • specific cutting force and their determination
  • properties and application of cutting tool materials and coatings
  • mechanisms of tool wear, durability of cutting tools
  • coolant, dry machining, minimum quantity lubrication
  • high speed cutting (basics and application)
  • micro machining application

 Forming:

  • basics in forming technology (plastic deformation, strain hardening, recrystallisation annealing)
  • characteristic parameters of forming technology (forming degree, forming speed, temperature, yield stress, tensile strength, elongation at fracture)
  • computational description (tension distribution, forming energy, efficiency)
  • selected forming processes and sample calculations (bending, deep drawing, hydroforming, wire drawing, extrusion and forging)
  • hybrid processes
  • forming presses
  • forming dies

Teaching methods

The topics of the course will be introduced and explained in lectures, sample calculations will be demonstrated
