Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • determine speed and acceleration with respect to different systems of reference for any point in a system of a kinematic chain with joints as a function of given coordinates and their derivatives and they represent those quantities as vectorial quantities in different coordinate systems;
  • explain the relationship between forces and motion using Newton's and Euler's principles;
  • determine and solve the equations of motion for rigid body systems and determine the necessary constraining forces;
  • determine the mechanical energy of a rigid-body system and establish the equation of motion for systems with one degree of freedom via the relationship between energy, work and power;
  • analyse the behaviour of gyros and rotating machine parts, especially in connection with static and dynamic unbalance;
  • explain the basics of Newtonian celestial mechanics;
  • apply elementary impact theory to systems of rigid bodies;
  • set up and linearize the equation of motion for oscillating mechanical systems with one degree of freedom and analyse their behavior in case of a free oscillation or as harmonically excited system.

Subject of course

Kinematics:

  • velocity and acceleration of points using vectors.
  • spatial movement of rigid bodies.
  • Movement in different frames of reference.
  • restricted movement in a plane.

Kinetics:

  • Basic laws of Newton: linear momentum.
  • Euler's laws for rotational movement.
  • Kinetic energy, power and work.

Special Applications:

  • Gyros.
  • Vibrations: free and forced.
  • Impact problems.
  • Planetary movement - Kepler's Laws.
  • Coriolis' forces.

Teaching methods

Because of COVID-19 the course will be given as “flipped classroom”. Each week there will be given topics that you should prepare using the slides and instructive videos from the TUWEL-course. You can use also the script or other books for this task. There will also be an online workshop on a weekly basis using ZOOM, where open questions will be answered. To prepare those workshops and to give feedback to you, appropriate Classroom Assessment Tools (CATs) will be used in TUWEL as well as during the online workshops.

Mode of examination

Written and oral

Additional information

On Monday, 5.10.2020, a preliminary discussion will be held from 12:00-13:30 together with the exercises Mechanik 2 VO via ZOOM.
