Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

perform independently basic synthesis and characterization methods in the field of surface technology. Especially, for the deposition techniques, a strong focus is on PVD based methods.

Subject of course

Overview on the basic PVD based deposition techniques and thin film related characterization methods

  • Vacuum technology
  • Deposition system and their concepts
  • Basic methods for mechanical characterization techniques
  • Thermal treatments and analysis methods
  • Structural and chemical analysis methods and their principals
  • Surface sensitive analysis methods

All presented methods should be carried out and learned by the students themselves in the lab under the supervision of the lectors.

Teaching methods

  • PVD based deposition methods (e.g. DC or DC pulse magnetron sputtering)
  • X-Ray diffraction (XRD)
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) + EDX analysis
  • Nanoindentation
  • Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA)
  • Optical profilometry

Mode of examination

Immanent

Additional information

The exercise will be hold IN PERSON in the winter semester 2022. It consists of the following parts:

1.     Online preliminary discussion via Zoom-Meeting on Tuesday, October 11th, 2022, 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. You have access to the meeting via the zoom link see TISS / TUWEL.

2.     Classroom exercise "Unit I to V": on October 13, 2022, 8:00 am - 10:00 am, and on October 17, 2022, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, in the form of a lecture. Participation is not compulsory, but is STRONGLY recommended as preparation for the compulsory test (see point 3). Documents will be available in the first classroom exercise.

3.     Compulsory attendance test on all topics of the LU "Unit I to V" is planned for October 25, 2022, 4 pm - 6 pm Participation in the test is MANDATORY. You will be informed about the registration for the test and the implementation at the preliminary meeting.

Registration for an exercise group and participation in the laboratory units are only possible after passing the test (26.10.2021)! Attention: NO repetition of the test possible!

4.      Laboratory units: 5 units, each 2 hours, days and times depending on the exercise group.

5.      Protocol, in the course of the laboratory exercise, each participant must prepare a protocol (see TISS template) of max. 7 pages (evaluation of the measurement results + short interpretation)

The laboratory exercise consists of five individual exercises (laboratory units) PVD, XRD, REM / EDX, nanoindentation, DSC / TG.

Anyone who has passed the test is allowed to register for an exercise group in the laboratory units.

By choosing the exercise group, you can choose the exercise day and exercise time. The group / schedule that is valid for this semester will be published in advance in the TUWEL!
