Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to summarise the history of surface engineering, to describe the principles of tribology and wear, to categorise surface modifications as well as to explain coating deposition methods.

Subject of course

  1. Short history of Surface Engineering
  2. Solid surfaces, Contacts between Surfaces, Prinicples of Tribology and Wear
  3. Corrosion
  4. Surface Modifications (Conversion of Surfaces) by:
    - mechanical
    - thermal and
    - thermo-chemical Treatments
  5. Coating Deposition by:
    1) mechanical, -thermal, - thermo-mechanical, -chemical, and -electro-chemical processes
    2) Physical Vapor Depositon (PVD)
    3) Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)

Teaching methods

Lecture with PowerPoint with concomitant discussions of case studies. A corresponding exercise in the WS (308.892) allows to apply the learned practical.

Examination modalities

During the semester, 4 partial exams take place. The overall grade is based on the achieved total scores. It is also possible to take an individual exam at the end of the semester (or after an appointment with the lecturer) over the entire course material.

Please see the exam dates for the course materials science of metallic materials (308.862), these will be the days for the written part of the exam. Simply e-mail me a week ahead that you would like to write the exam for surface technology.
