  • Semester hours: 4.0
  • Credits: 5.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • describe the functions, components and design criteria of hydraulic electric and pneumatic aircraft systems
  • know the requirements for aerodynamic control surfaces for small and commercial aircraft
  • determine the aerodynamic loads on control surfaces and use the results for the dimensioning of system components
  • determine the pressure losses of hydraulic aircraft systems
  • by means of examples
    • explain the systems for pressurization, ventilation and air conditioning of aircraft cabins and calculate an air conditioning system for an aircraft cabin
    • calculate the reduction of fuel consumption by the use of external supply devices at the airport
    • present the basic features of modern fly-by-wire flight control and regulation systems
    • provide an overview of other systems (landing gear system, fuel system, fire and smoke detection systems, and systems to prevent ice buildup on aircraft structures)
    • explain the advantages and disadvantages of systems designed according to the More Electric Aircraft principle
  • understand the background of icing tests and the equipment and systems required for these tests
  • design an air data system
  • be able to explain the requirements for systems depending on their criticality as well as the processes for development, verification and certification including redundancy concepts
  • be able to develop a concept for reducing the probability of failure of a system function.

Subject of course

Hydraulic power systems, electric power systems, pneumatic power systems (bleed air), flight control systems, actuators, air conditioning, landing gear system, fuel systems, avionics systems, de-icing systems, system safety, fault tolerance, standards

Teaching methods

Lecture with the aim of providing students with a basic understanding of the cause-effect relationships of design and quality parameters. Demonstration of the correlations by means of animated diagrams (applets). Use of media (video sequences, educational films).

In the exercise parts, students are taught to independently carry out designs and calculations of aviation-specific systems.

Mode of examination

Immanent
