Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • design planetary and bevel gear independently
  • explain the mode of operation of worm, cycloid gear and freewheels
  • calculate gear micro-geometries independently
  • understand the occurrence of gear damage and assess its consequences
  • master in-depth calculation tasks of machine construction
  • implementing machine designs with 3D CAD systems in a methodically sensible manner as well as using computer-aided design and verification methods
  • use common machine element calculation programs
  • describe the most important cost parameters using the example of gearbox construction
  • understand motion sequences and the resulting forces in gearboxes or multi-body simulation systems

Subject of course

In the course, handling of the calculation programs KISSSOFT and M-Design is explained. Shaft calculations and shaft-hub connections as well as a simple gearbox are calculated with these two programs. The differences in the programs should be shown and the different procedures recognized.

In KISSSYS, the modeling environment of KISSSOFT, a more complex gear model is built up, which is used for further calculations. The shafts and bearings are calculated in the model and the spur gear teeth are designed.

In the next step, a contact analysis of the spur gear teeth is carried out. Then a load spectrum is applied and finally the efficiency and the thermal balance of the transmission are calculated.

Teaching methods

Lecture on the theoretical basics and basic calculations of the content mentioned above

  • practice and apply the content using examples
  • performance assessment through written and/or oral examination (VO)
  • creation of an independent construction with CAD
  • examination-based performance assessment (UE)
