Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to carry out state-of-the-art static calculations for steel constructions (e.g. bridge cranes, crane runways), to check calculations from software packages for their plausibility as well as to carry out necessary standard (Eurocode 3) research.

Theoretical part

1. Pull/push rod
2. Technical beam theory

  • Flexibility and Displacement method
  • Shear stress in the beam
  • Comparison of the first and second order beam theory

3. Stability of flexible rods

Practical part

1. Preparation of static calculations
2. Computer-supported preparation of static calculations
3. Development of load-bearing structures and their elements in steel an aluminium
4. Eurocode 3

  • Basic concepts and definitions
  • Stability
  • Fatigue

5. Crane


These point will be discussed with reference to examples from practice and to international standards (EN 1993, EN 13001).

Teaching methods

Lecture, presentation of practical examples, solution of problems with different software packages (FEM, Mathcad)

Examination modalities

Oral exam

The examination takes the form of a presentation followed by a defense of a worked out calculation example (crane runway) using a web conference tool. The sample calculation will be made available to the participants by TUWEL during the lecture.
