Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • classify industrial processes according to sectors, energy sources and energy demand (-structures).
  • analyze and evaluate economic, technical and ecological aspects and framework conditions of the energy supply of industrial processes.
  • to design energy systems for the supply of industrial processes taking into account typical technologies and alternatives fundamentally with rough calculations.
  • identify energy efficiency measures and flexibilities in industrial processes and evaluate them from different perspectives.
  • classify the role of the industrial sector in the transition to a renewable energy system.

Subject of course

Due to its high energy consumption, the industry presents a huge lever in achieving the 2050 climate targets. Under the keyword "digitalization", new disruptive technologies are currently being developed, aiming to make the industry more sustainable. In this lecture, the state-of-the-art of industrial energy systems will be presented and current developments will be introduced.
This lecture gives a broad overview of the topic and is designed as an introduction to the in-depth courses in the specialization module "Industrial Energy Systems".
