Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • use the principle of virtual work in statics as well in dynamics.
  • compute potential and kinetic energies to derive the Lagrange equations. The students are also able to find static solutions and the linearised equations in their vicinity.
  • to compute the solutions of a static system by use of the potential energy and to study the stability of the soution.
  • to compute and draw the cutting forces of a beam for further use in the principle of virtual forces. Further they are able to compute static indetermined forces as well as displacements and rotations.
  • to find valid Ritz-ansätze for beam systems to receive Lagrangian equations with few degrees of freedom. There they use kinetic energy, potential of gravity forces as well as internal energy of the beam. Beneath all abilities they already learned at the Lagrangian chapter, especially eigen frequencies of beams are presented.

Subject of course

d'Alembert's principle, Lagrange's equations, 3-dimensional continuum (strain tensor, stress tensor, constitutive equations), linearised elasticity theory, curved rods, energy methods, approximation methods, stability of equilibria and motions
