Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to identify current problems regarding the sustainability transformation in the mobility sector and in particular to identify and address legal issues in this context. They understand how the Austrian legal system structures the different parts of the transport and mobility sector and get to know the essential legal foundations. Based on this, they are able to actively participate in the discourse on the legal requirements for sustainable mobility and to contribute to shaping future developments.

Subject of course

The seminar addresses current legal issues related to sustainability transformation in the mobility sector.

The students first get to know the essential legal foundations of the transport and mobility sector in Austria in a systematic overview. On the one hand, the focus is on transport-related planning processes (especially road construction projects) from the perspective of climate protection, and on the other hand, on the field of public transport with a special focus on "alternative" sustainable mobility services.

The legal perspective is expanded to include technological and sociological aspects that are relevant for well-designed legal framework for sustainable mobility. Guest lecturers from different disciplines therefore open up various perspectives on the topic and introduce the students to different methods for analyzing complex complex sustainability challenges in the mobility sector.

In the course of the semester, the students work on a thematic focus of their own choice. In individual or group work, the chosen thematic focus is elaborated and the results are presented and discussed in a joint plenary session. The type of presentation can be chosen by the students themselves (creativity is welcome). The results will be summarized in a written paper (seminar paper).

The seminar is organized in cooperation with the LVA 230.057 Interdisziplinäres Seminar nachhaltige Mobilität.

Teaching methods

The goals of the seminar will be achieved by the following methods: lectures for thematic introduction, guest lectures and critical exchange with representatives of different disciplines, debate in the plenum, independent work in groups, presentation of the results of the group work (format freely chooseable) and preparation of a written summary (seminar paper).
