After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand complex issues related to the rural space. Substantive work, research, moderation and discussion guidance are taught. The course is a practice-oriented exercise in reflecting on the built environment and creating an intensive exchange with practitioners and the lived reality. Discussion of essential content and challenges is the main focus. Emphasis is given to the exchange between students, experts, citizens, teachers, representatives of politics, associations and initiatives. By observing and discussing, students will be able to see, interpret and understand cultural landscapes and their transformations.
"Hiking perspectives" means gaining inspiration from what already exists and making new discoveries. Walking is a grounding way of discovering spatiotemporality in a search for new approaches to existing questions. The excursion aims at providing a holistic view using fragments that can only emerge from movement and personal reflection. Our investigations create reflexive walks that aim to resolve specific planning issues. Being able to change perspectives, to think beyond the existing and to reflect on situations are important skills for spatial planners. In accordance with the trend of deceleration and contemplation, walking has become socially acceptable again.
The main component of the course is a one-week excursion from August 28, 2022 to September 03, 2022, starting in Znojmo/Znaim (Czechia). On September 02, the closing event with a framework program and an oriental buffet will take place in Drosendorf castle (Drosendorf an der Thaya). The topics include the "Sommerfrische" in Znojmo/Znaim, architecture from the Gründerzeit period to today – including a visit to Villa Weinberger (1927) –, border villages, edges and transitions, wine and landscapes, settlement structures, initiatives and the culture of failure, wildcat feeding, changes in art and culture, historic paths and gardens, metamorphoses of the border, the jewish Waldviertel, culture and buildings of the "Sommerfrische".
