Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

... understand and critically reflect on fundamental concepts of the funding (financialization), provision, regulation, and governance in infrastructure policy (esp. municipal infrastructures).

The seminar has a planning, governance and economic focus:

-       Means of provisioning and funding municipal, regional or national  infrastructures;

-       critical reflection of financialization of infrastructures;

-       identification and mapping of stakeholders involved;

-       case studies on failures (or [less likely] successes) of financialization of infrastructures.

Subject of course

The seminar deals with the concept of financialization of infrastructures, the pros and (mainly) cons of the logics of financial markets in providing, regulating (accessibility) and funding of infrastructures.The seminar also tackles the question of who is involved in these processes of financialization, and the impacts these processes have on planning decisions.

Teaching methods

-       Introduction to the seminar topics.

-       Reading of 3 papers to prepare for a joint discussion of concepts and principles.

-       Collection and reference to a joint literature basis.

-       Individual research questions.

-       Draft of a seminar paper & presentation in the plenary session.

-       Final presentation of seminar papers (results, conclusions).
