After successful completion of the course, students are able to work independently, problem- and task-related in planning. The methodological and instrumental knowledge already acquired in the basic courses has been deepened, skills in conceptual, strategic, integrated and application-related planning have been acquired. Using a concrete planning area of a district or an urban region as an example, the students became familiar with fields of action in the interaction of politics, decision-makers, planning and the population and independently developed a development concept in groups, including a mission statement and lead projects as well as an implementation strategy. The results are presented in an understandable, comprehensible, graphically and textually appealing way.
The land between the watersIn Brigittenau - the "land between the waters" - large-scale brownfields meet lively Gründerzeit neighborhoods, railroad tracks meet freeway junctions, shopping centers meet local recreation areas. Different periods and ideologies of urban development - from dense Gründerzeit block structures to post-war row buildings, office towers of the 1990s to residential courtyards of the interwar period - have left their mark.Impetus for the existing citySince its origins, Brigittenau has been subject to a variety of transformation processes: Due to the reclamation of large areas by the Danube regulation - to which some historic areas fell victim at the same time - Brigittenau grew rapidly on a massive scale until the beginning of the 20th century. Due to the development of the Nordwestbahnhof area, population growth will again increase rapidly in the coming years. Where 150 years ago one of the largest terminus stations of the monarchy was located, a new district for almost 14,000 inhabitants and 4,700 employees will be created in the next ten years. The high development dynamics in Brigittenau give reason to deal with the question of what impulses will result from the new districts for the development of the existing city, how old and new can be combined. Growth processes have always been accompanied by the transformation of existing structures and have the potential to reorient them.City in climate crisisEspecially in view of the climate crisis, it is important to develop new perspectives for the district. The city of Vienna has the vision to be climate neutral by 2040. What consequences does this have for urban planning? What does this mean for Brigittenau? Since green spaces are underrepresented in Brigittenau, key questions arise - among others - regarding the transformation of existing street spaces and the improvement of the microclimate. Since especially "hot" and dense neighborhoods like Brigittenau are additionally characterized by a relatively low social status, the question of climate justice and socio-ecological transformation must be in the foreground. An image for the big pictureThis extraordinary planning task requires extraordinary processes of engagement and development conception. Therefore, this space should be understood as comprehensively as possible in its settlement-structural, functional, historical, economic, ecological and identity-forming aspects. Researching, questioning, curious and unbiased, questions will be formulated and scenarios created in an open process, in order to develop meaningful positions and concepts based on them, which propose a way of dealing with this complex space. The task of Project 2 will be to create an integrated district development concept with a clear focus on aspects of climate protection and climate change adaptation, from which objectives for settlement and business location development, mobility and social cohesion can also be derived. Images must be generated that are capable of renegotiating these interrelationships - ultimately, what is needed is an understanding of the big picture.
A repertoire of qualitative and quantitative methods, techniques and tools are used to relate intuitive and emotional approaches to rational ones and theoretical models. By working with sketches, plans, models, diagrams, texts, photos and films, the urban space is recorded and analysed and, based on this, guiding principles and guiding projects are developed. Based on a joint "layer analysis", the structural-spatial, economic, social, ecological and cultural conditions are examined and presented for the respective subject areas. In developing the guiding principle, it is important to convey an image of the "big picture", to put the essentials in the foreground and to motivate action. The iterative drafting process is supported and accompanied within the framework of intensive workshops and corrections. Additional inputs and discussion contributions from the supervisors and external experts provide inspiration and motivation. Presentations of the (interim) results with feedback and discussion are used to communicate the main ideas and to develop them further.
Interim reports and presentations as well as final documentation and presentation. The overall assessment is done by the team of supervisors.
