Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • explain the essential basics of energy management and energy technology
  • classify the work fields of spatial planning in the context of climate change, the scarcity of resources and the reliability of supply
  • present direct and indirect links between "energy" (in the dimensions of heat, electricity, mobility) and "spatial planning"
  • assess the potential of renewable energy sources
  • characterise and classify the energy efficiency of spatial and settlement structures
  • name relevant legal framework conditions
  • to describe basic energy policy goals and to propose measures in the field of energy governance

Subject of course

In the lecture, the fundamentals of the working field "Energy-related Spatial Planning" will be covered. Starting with a definition and classification of the term, students will be introduced to the topic of "energy-conscious urban and regional development". The focus lies on conveying fundamental aspects of the topic field, with an emphasis on the critical examination of data bases, thematic delimitations and overlaps as well as methodological problems and their practical solutions.

In addition to the basic introduction to the topic (trends, challenges in the field of energy, relevance of the topic for spatial planning), the fundamentals of energy economics and energy technology are taught, the intersections of the fields of spatial planning and energy are dealt with, the legal and energy policy framework conditions are presented, and relevant stakeholders and instruments are addressed in relation to "classic" spatial planning.

Teaching methods

This is a lecture course. It is recommended to combine this course with VU 280.A36 "Fokus Raumplanung – Energy Planning - Hands On (with field trip)".
