After successful completion of the course, students are able to use a combination of different methodologies, from visits, (walking) interviews, (participatory) observations, alongside visual techniques of mapping and diagrams to explore the spatiality of labour practices, economies and politics of post growth initiatives. They will learn how making visible, or ‘spatializing’ information can be a means to bring new insights and indeed new knowledge to urban problems. The will learn how to use forms of visualization to present and document empirical research, and they will be able to present their research process, used methods, theories and findings in form of an oral presentation and a written research report.
This exercise course aims to explore new emerging post-growth initiatives in Vienna and to examine how these sit within the city’s wider plans and policies for work, business and employment in the context of climate change. The course will focus on how ‘post-growth’ organisations and practices might contribute to new kinds of urban productivity and youth integration. We will apply theoretical insights from the related lecture and seminar courses to specific sites and cases in Vienna through methodological approaches of researching and exploring. Starting from local urban sites, students will learn to use a combination of different methodologies, from visits, (walking) interviews, (participatory) observations, alongside visual techniques of mapping and diagrams to explore the spatiality of labour practices, economies and politics of post growth initiatives.

Taking the ‘jobs vs climate’ debate as its backdrop, the exercise course aims to build our discussions and understandings of urban productivity, labour and inclusion. To do so we will focus on how ‘post-growth’ organisations and practices might contribute to new kinds of urban productivity and youth integration. Applying theoretical insights from the lecture and seminar courses, we will question what are the labour practices and economies associated with these new civic initiatives, and urban social innovations? Are they accessible, equitable or fair, and what kinds of barriers do people face in participating or accessing them, socially, culturally or financially? What is their spatiality, and how does their spatiality intersect with their economies?
The course is divided into three intensive teaching blocks (ITBs), each centring on a different stage of research:
ITB1 Exploring the Field – will introduce students to main urban actors and field site and to basic methods of field research such as techniques of interviewing and mapping as well as on ethical issues in conducting fieldwork.
At the end of ITB1 students will form groups, identify their research sub-theme and begin developing a research design for their chosen case study.
ITB2 Gathering data – will work as a platform to discuss the specific issues and challenges encountered by students in their research between ITB1 and ITB2. Further, teachers will provide critical feedback to groups of students concerning the data they already collected/analyzed.
ITB 3 Presenting research findings – will support students in their visualization and presentation techniques and focus on the mapping process. In the closing unit, students will present their group work and engage in a discussion, transferring the theoretical knowledge gained in the module’s lecture and seminar to the case studies.

This exercise " Paths and tools of the production of space” is part of the module 11 "Urban culture, public space" (consisting of three courses, VO 280.534, SE 280.535 and UE 280.536) which is offered during three intensive teaching weeks (ITB) by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Urban Culture and Public Space (http://skuor.tuwien.ac.at). Module 11 compiles a set of integrated courses dealing with lived space at the interface of the fields of urban studies, urban design and urban planning. In 2019, the main focus will be on "Urban Productivity: New Public Space, Youth Integration and Labour Market Access”. The courses mainly address master students (late bachelor or early doctoral students), especially from planning and architecture are invited to take part. Yet we explicitly welcome students coming from other Viennese universities in related disciplines, such as urban studies, urban design, geography, sociology, political science, landscape architecture, cultural studies, etc. as well as 'Mitbeleger'. The course language is English. We support students active participation in debates and interactive teaching formats, and encourage you to bring in and develop your own ideas and critical perspectives. To take part in all three courses of the module 11 please register for module 11 until 2nd October 2019 (11:59 pm) via TISS registration for the course, VO 280.534. Further course registration will be carried out directly at the kick-off meeting on 3rd of October, 08:30am (Seminar room 3/4) in Augasse 2-6, 2nd floor.
Dates of the Module 11
The main body of teaching will be delivered during three intensive teaching blocks (ITB):
- ITB 1 – 21st to 25th October 2019
- ITB 2 – 18th to 26th November 2019 (including free conference visit for guest lectures)
- ITB 3 – 20th to 24th January 2020
Further consultations will be offered by the teaching team between the ITBs.
Students’ final grades in the exercise are based on a group-based project. The assessment consists of three main segments:
1_ Visualization of the research project and final results in form of mappings or diagrams.
2_ Presentation of the final results to students’ group, teachers and invited guest critics.
3_ Research report reflecting and presenting the research process, used methods and theories.
At least 80% of participation in the course is mandatory.
In order to attend the exercise, students will be required to take part in the module's lecture and seminar courses.
