After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • Engage with theories on forms of urban-regional and metropolitan development in the global (North-South) context

  • Understand how cities cope with challenges of sustainability and resilience triggered by urban growth from a global perspective

  • Discuss planning strategies for managing urban growth in highly urbanized regions

  • Discuss forms of sustainable and resilient development for metropoles from a multiscalar perspective

Subject of course

  • Readings and discussions on current issues and strategic approaches to resilient and sustainable development in highly urbanized regions

  • Substantiated analysis of empirical case study cities/metropoles from different continents and corresponding challenges derived from urban expansion and agglomeration

  • Critical reflection on planning strategies of highly urbanized regions in terms of coping with global and local challenges
