Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply the acquired skills praktically:

The learning goal is to deepen competence in the design of three-dimensional objects through practical exercises and by acquiring theoretical background knowledge from the fields of design theory, material-related shaping, design theory and methodology. The planning, production and presentation of art is methodically prepared using the example of a specific topic-related task. These are developed at 1:1 scale by means of digital and physical design methods. Forms of presentation are developed and tested.

At the Museum

“Lebendige Ausstellungen schaffen Situationen – sie fürchten sich nicht vor dem Bleiben der Besucher*innen und dem, was sie tun könnten, sondern aktivieren sie. Zugleich überschreiten sie aber das Feld der sozial aktiven Situation [...] und aktivieren auch die Objekte sowie die gesamte, das Format tragende Infrastruktur.” (Thomas Oberender, Die lebendige Ausstellung, 2018)

In this year's Form*Design module, we would like to explore possible potentials of the museum as a site of lively discourse. Students will be given space and opportunity to develop and practically implement visions and ideas in this regard. To this end, we will enter into an active dialogue with all the protagonists of such an institution. Museums are places of representation, of knowledge transfer as well as repositories and guardians of our cultural canon. They bear a delicate social responsibility in dealing with postcolonial discourses and must always be questioned and rethought. What is the social value of museums today? For whom are museums (not) accessible and what is shown in them? Are they still contemporary in terms of their enormous consumption of resources?

In the course of the course, concepts and designs of modular objects for the exhibition spaces of the Weltmuseum Wien will be developed. In two teams, ideas and design proposals related to the project theme will be developed and practically implemented. These will be tested and discussed in the form of artistic interventions on site at the museum. The modeling room of the research area, which is available on Mondays and Wednesdays, will serve as the studio and production site. A corresponding interest in art and culture, as well as in craft work, are necessary prerequisites for participation in the course. Active participation and a high level of commitment are expected.

An interim report of the project results will be given in the course of the interim presentations in May 2023. The research results achieved will be presented to the public in June/July 2023 in the form of final presentations in the presence of all project partners and participants in the premises of the Weltmuseum. The exhibition rooms of the Weltmuseum are open to students during general opening hours throughout the semester, with free admission.

As part of the Form*Design module, an excursion to Turin will take place between March 22 and 25. This is intended to provide diverse input on exhibition design, display, and mediation. Turin offers a very broad museum landscape with diverse institutions, such as the Egyptian Collection, the Casa Mollino, the Archivio Ezio Gribaudo or the Castello di Rivoli. In addition, visits such as Palazzo Lavoro, Torino Esposizioni (both Pier Luigi Nervi), Palazzo Reale or Cappella della Sacra Sindone (Camillo-Guarino Guarini) are planned.

Both the realization of the exhibits and the excursion will incur costs, most of which will have to be borne by the students.
