After successful completion of the course, students are able to write scientifically sound texts independently, to conduct the appropriate research and to adequately present the findings both in writing and graphically.
On their way into the Vienna Basin, the streams oft he Viennese Woods have carved into the hillside a series of valleys, which have been used as settlement areas for centuries. The historic linear villages (Straßen- and Angerdörfer) along these settlement axes form the starting point for the development of the north-west of Vienna.
In this seminar, the changes in the linear village structures of Grinzing, Sievering, Dornbach, Ottakring etc. and the surrounding cultural and urban landscape will be analysed together. The underlying processes in the development and transformation of the settlement ribbons and the associated traffic and open space networks will be investigated. Historical and contemporary literatur, image and map materials will serve as a basis for this, as will individual explorations on site. The findings will be presented in a seminar paper both in writing and in a series of maps.
In addition to the co-operation with the research project mentioned below, the seminar is also linked to the design studio: Tal - Schluss - Stadt (the two courses can be attended together or independently!). The kick-off and final symposium will be held together with the design studio. In addition, there will be several opportunities for dialogue and exchange between the courses during the semester in the form of presentations of preliminary results and additional input from guest speakers.
