Vienna’s "Wald- und Wiesengürtel", adopted by the City Council in 1905, was one of the world's first large-scale landscape planning measures. From the Danube area over the Bisamberg and the Wienerwald to the Laaer Berg, it still forms an essential recreational area and important air reservoir for the urban population. Although there is a strict building ban in the "Schutzgebiet Wald- und Wiesengürtel" (SWW), during the 20th century the green belt was repeatedly reduced in size, legally modified and extended in other places. In the seminar we will first look at international examples of "Green Belts" and then reconstruct the development of the Vienna SWW. We will deal with questions of landscape planning and urban design, the planning discourse ("1,000 hectare plan", "Grüngürtel Wien" etc.) and the planning instruments (zoning, STEP etc.). We will also have the opportunity to discuss the past, present and future of the Wald- und Wiesengürtel with experts from Vienna's urban planning departments.
