After successful completion of the course, students are able to know the main lines of development of European Garden- and Landsape Design and to consider them as context in current questions / tasks of open space planning.

The course provides a brief overview of European garden and landscape architecture of the modern period, which is preserved as a building, cultural and planning heritage, both hidden and visible. Attention is given both to phenomenology of open spaces, one might say to the canonical rules of composition, and to the genesis of features. In addition to the basic principles of garden theory and the history of ideas, the stylistic characteristics, design details as well as functional and social aspects will be taught and put in relation to the open spaces of the city (as well as to the forms of land use). In a small update, each epoch will be questioned according to today's challenges (sustainability, participation ...) and critical discourses.In small excursions, the typical regional features and the question of how to deal with the inherited cultural heritage in terms of monument preservation will be discussed.
