After successful completion of the course, students are able to formulate a research question and discuss it in the form of an independently written (scientifically) sound text.
Adherence to the practices and customs of scientific work should be an integral part of the student's qualification.
The biographies of the three architects Franz (1818-1879) - Camillo (1843-1903) - Siegfried (1876-1945) are characterised by the continuities but especially by the social and cultural-historical ruptures that took place against the backdrop of the so-called "long 19th century" and the first half of the 20th century. The three successive generations worked on architectural, urban planning and theoretical projects, and their traces can be found at different levels throughout Central Europe. Franz Sitte came from a family with many children in northern Bohemia. He was an important representative of Austrian sacred architecture who also left behind numerous theoretical writings. The Viennese architect Camillo Sitte (1843-1903) is best known for his work "Der Städte-Bau nach seinen künstlerischen Grundsätzen", published in 1889, in which he criticised contemporary urban planning of the late 19th century with powerful language and images. Since its first edition, the work has been reprinted several times and translated into numerous different languages (en, fr, it, es, gr, ru, jap, ...). As an architect, Camillo Sitte left behind a manageable oeuvre that developed against a background of traditional historicism. One of the few buildings realised in Vienna is the Mechitarist Church in Neustiftgasse - a classical Gesamtkunstwerk of the second half of the 19th century. To get closer to Sitte's architectural and artistic work, a guided tour will take place in this extraordinary sacred space. Siegfried Sitte is a rather unfamiliar figure on the local architectural scene today; his main legacy lies in his attempt to improve building legislation in the interwar period. After the unexpected death of his father, Siegfried Sitte was responsible for the continuation of open urban development projects, but he also planned and realised his own designs and thus emancipated himself from his father.
Based on the joint reading of "Städte-Bau", the question will be explored as to why this book in particular had so much influence. Where are the lines of connection between the three generations? Who are the individual protagonists of the Sitte family of architects and what is their respective background? What influence did the family have on the Austrian architectural landscape and did they leave a lasting mark on it or not?

Composing a written analysis (=seminar paper): Each participant has to submit a written, methodically impeccable, scientific paper of approx. 20 pages of continuous text. Language of the written work (preferably) German.
The assessment criteria also include active participation in the group meetings, short presentations and text discussions. In particular, however, active participation in the tours offered to libraries and archives: Archive of the TU Wien; ONB; AzW Library; MAK Library; Church and Archive of the Mechitarists Vienna. The corresponding dates will be announced at the beginning of the course - see "Further Informations" for the schedule.
