After successful completion of the course, students are able to, analyse the complexity of urban planning and open space planning systems and the interplay of political, social and ecological processes and present them precisely in a results-oriented manner. After successfully completing the exercise, they will be able to recognise possible fields of action in the urban context and will be able to develop urban planning and landscape architecture projects there conceptually and methodically in a team.

The appropriate format, medium and scale can be selected for the presentation of the projects developed and the objectives achieved can be demonstrated argumentatively using the vocabulary acquired in the course.

Using a specific Viennese urban area (1km x 1km), the theoretical knowledge imparted in the lecture is applied and the respective morphological development and typological structuring analysed. Potentials and deficits are worked out as starting points that enable students to develop large-scale design concepts.

By creating variants and working in teams, work results are negotiated and finalised at different scales (1:10,000 - 1:200). The focus is on the grain, development and programming of open spaces and building structures, the formation of urban space, the relationship between open space and built space, the significance of the ground floor and the qualification of public open space.

Thematic research and analysis with the following project development in group work. Exchange and discussion in weekly work meetings and intensive phases in joint workshops.

Performance evaluation via interim presentation and concluding project presentation with consideration of the work process in the course of the semester. Also the participation in discussions regarding the lectures.

The deregistration from VU Urban Planning/VU Landscape Architecture courses after the semester
started is possible until 14.4.2024. if the course is not completed after this date, this will automatically result in a negative assessment.

Due to the new Curriculum, valid since October 1st, 2021, following courses are a requirement to VU Städtebau:
- STEOP
- VU Gestaltungslehre
- VU Hochbau 1

due to transitional provisions following courses of the expired Curriculum are valid as well
