Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand cities as pioneers of social change and as centers of political and economic change in the last millennia.  They are informed about urban living space, which is characterized by suburbanization and structural change and increasingly requires planning to be understood as a dynamic development process.

Furthermore, students are able to work on complex design tasks from the field of urban planning independently, systematically and with an original, contemporary design approach on the basis of a precise design language. They have the competence to recognise fields of action in an urban context and to develop appropriate urban planning solutions. Students are able to conduct their own research and to establish topic-related fundamentals. They are able to create design concepts and present them comprehensively in the form of strategy, draft and detail plans.

Subject of course

The background:
In view of the rapid social and climatic change processes worldwide, most traditional housing models seem outdated.
Until the 20th century, people were thought of as residents structured in families, often working and living in the same place for life.
The current upheavals in demographic development (birth rate, life expectancy, migration, etc.), in the world of work (restructuring of working conditions, etc.),
in the family structure (singles, single parents, patchwork families etc.) and in social relationships (changed gender roles etc.), however, create
- in Europe as well as in Southeast Asia - new models of living, which result in changed living needs and thus require new forms of housing and new urban typologies.
Indonesia's urban population will continue to grow in the coming years, and urban growth will be a consequence of national migration
due to rising sea levels and increasing urbanization.

The challenge:
The unprecedented growth of the urban population offers new opportunities but also leads to a tightening of housing issues.
New and old challenges, such as providing sustainable mobility, securing or enabling jobs and infrastructure
is necessary to alleviate poverty and can counteract the spread of informal developments and the deterioration of the urban environment.

The project:
After a semester of preparation on questions of urban development, its cultural and social significance and the historical development of urban living in Vienna (module)
as well as an intensive but brief design examination of current issues of urban living in Vienna in cooperation with guests from Indonesia, Italy and Romania,
we will conduct a two-week excursion to Indonesia in November 2020.
This excursion will probably lead to the area of Bali and Yogyakarta, and support the necessary research on 10ects design in the winter semester.
The winter semester's major design project will focus on urban spaces, housing and working conditions in Indonesia
