After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on complex design tasks from the field of urban planning independently, systematically and with an original, contemporary design approach on the basis of a precise design language. They have the competence to recognise fields of action in an urban context and to develop appropriate urban planning solutions. Students are able to conduct their own research and to establish topic-related fundamentals. They are able to create design concepts and present them comprehensively in the form of strategy, draft and detail plans.
Sarajevo or Looking for Walter
Ottoman core, austro-hungarian and modernist expansion, Olympia 84, siege of the 90s, Dayton peace agreement. Todays Sarajevo, the young capital of an almost ungovernable state, is stagnation and crisis at the same time. The ethnic division laid down by constitution forms ideal ground for nationalistic populism. In political debates the conflict is kept artificially high to distract from the country’s real problems: Sarajevo has, among other cities, the highest air pollution in Europe, water restrictions are on a daily basis and salaries are long over-due. In addition, the generally poor economic situation, braindrain, an outdated education system and a youth unemployment rate of almost 60% give little future prospects to the post-conflict generation.
Meanwhile, Sarajevo seems to be waiting. For the EU or for Walter *.
However, the inhabitants of Sarajevo have the ability to preserve their humor, spirit and attitude, especially in seemingly hopeless situations. During the siege, plays have been performed in the national theatre, a film festival was formed and the idea for a unique museum for contemporary art was born. Despite political and religious extremes or debates about the final division of the country, the city is still proud of its multiculturalism. Living together has proven itself over centuries, the inhabitants got used to each other. In addition to cultural wealth, this coexistence has created an impressive architectural landscape of ottoman buildings, austro-hungarian style and unique modernism, which forms the valley and is surrounded by countless red tiled roofs all around. Even recent large-scale projects by foreign investors, which in terms of scale, function and location are clearly misplaced urban developments, cannot destroy this cityscape - yet.
* A synonym for the resistance of the multicultural Sarajevo from the film 'Walter defends Sarajevo' by Hajrudin Krvavac, YU 1972.
In order to read these socio-economic complexities and spatial pecularities, the studio will create cartographic sections through the city structure. A catalog of current topics should pragmatically, but reflectively, disclose the current situation. By drawing tendencies, overlays, displaying continuities and discontinuities, new images and perspectives are created using both objective and subjective maps. The basis is the typological and morphological analysis of the entire city structure with high significance for graphics and representation in the urban context.
Based on the findings of the analysis, scenarios are finally created and new narratives developed. A joint strategy will try to provide answers as to how the Sarajevo of the next generation wants to be and which measures are necessary from a planning perspective.
