Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

In this 1:1 design studio  students will be developing 1:1 design sollutions for an interdisciplinary art installation. The studio focuses on computational design, digital fabrication and robotic pocesses. Basing on the material systems developed in the WS 2022 during the design studio Design for Assembly Disassembly, the students will be further learning to integrate these material systems in 1:1 design solutions.

Morphology of Sound is a research project in collaboration with die Angewandte Digital Arts Department and IoA. In a interdisciplinary environment students will be collaborating with Digital Arts Students who are developing sound installations as well as the IoA stuents who will be working on projections. There will be montly meetings with all project partners to exchange the status quo of the project.

As an expected result the project aims to explore an interdisciplinary path for art generation merging the media of geometry and sound by integrating scientific methods from the fields of artificial intelligence, audio data analysis. Throughout the project designs driven by sound as well as sound driven the design will be approached as medium of experimentation. Through multiple processes of bilinear transformations between geometry and sound a dictionary of compositions and objects will emerge.

The studio is offered in combination with Sondermodul 259.554.

Teaching methods

The main method of the course is to tackle different design problems in intense environment of design development and exchange which we call hackathons.

Along these hackathons students will regroup to tackle distinck design issues. The final result of the course therefore will be a result of incrementally built knowledge upon the course subject.

Previous knowledge

This course is a only in presence course. There is an intense week where we will be spending in Lindbrunn to experiment together with the sound artists. This will be between 20-30 May.

It is a benefit to have intermediate knowledge in Rhino and Grasshopper

We will be teaching you all you need to know as long as you do not work on a MAC operating system.
