Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the necessary basics for people working in the AEC-context (Architecture - Engineering - Construction) in the areas of Building Physics, Building Ecology, and Human Ecology.  These knowledge is required for architects to properly react to urgent questions of today's building domain (Energy usage of buildings, occupant's comfort, Performance of building in the hygrothermal, visual, acousticals, and other domains).

A special focus is put on an in-depth understanding of the scientific basics and relevant terminology of the mentioned areas.

Furthermore, students are motivated to train the relevant skills in building physics related domain knowledge.

Moreover, the interfaces to building construction, to regulations, and to technical and design-focused are elaborated within the lecture.

Subject of course

This lecture features the following content:  

  • Introduction to the fundamentals of building physics and building ecology
  • Energy and mass transfer in building components
  • Energy performance of buildings
  • Determination of heating and cooling loads of buildings
  • Solar controls and shading
  • Thermal optimization of buildings
  • Thermal comfort
  • Energy-efficient and sustainable building design
  • Human ecology
  • Moisture control in buildings
  • fundamental Overview on HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning)

Teaching methods

This course will be held by using a portfolio of different teaching methods. Thereby, students are motivated to learn the course content's in part via classical methods (lecture/videos of relevant subchapters) and in part via self-learning material. The E-learning component will be strongly emphasized.

  • Calculations (utilizing domain-specific tools and simply rule-of-the thumb assessment/manual calculation)
  • Description where and when calculation schemes simulation could be deployed.

Please note that in Summerterm 2022, the lecture will take place asychnron to the lecture hall meetings (no general lecture hall meetings), and in distance mode. That means that it is not useful to go into the lecture hall, as there will no "live"-Event take place.

This lecture is the new-curriculum-successor of the previous curriculum (old curriculum) "253.039 Bauphysik und Humanökologie" (Bacehlor programm Architecture)
