Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to write a methodically correct, scientific paper on a subject of art and architectural history, deal with relevant literature and receive instructions on archive and source research

Subject of course

Students are required to prepare a short academic work on the basis of a topic focus changing each year from the field of the history of art and architecture. The seminar communicates approaches for the structuring of the work in terms of method and content. Each student is expected to present his topic within the framework of a short paper in the seminar.

The Viennese residential building and its equipment.

The seminar s devoted to one of the most striking and important building types, the residential building. It is part of a cycle spreading over several semesters and focussing on the architecture of Viennese residential buildings from the late Middle Ages till today.

The beginning in this semester 2020/21 is made by the residential buildings from the late Middle Ages till 1815, including civic and peasant as well as monastic typologies of residing.

After a short introduction we will proceed to the topic by excursions and archive visits. After that, there will be three input session with lectures and introductions into scientific work and graphic analysis.

PLACE:

The course will be held via distance learning with several excursions.The introduction will take place in Seminarraum 257, Abt. Denkmalpflege (Dept. Building conservation), staircase III, 2. floor. If possible, some presentations will be held at place in Seminarraum 257, Abt. Denkmalpflege (Dept. Building conservation), staircase III, 2. floor.

Teaching methods

Inherent thematic introduction, guidance for scientific work, lectures and common discussions, partial submissions with correction, small excursions on site and in archives, presentation of short papers and elaboration of a handouts. Feedback on all papers.

Additional information

Optional seminar for the first study section.

The course will be held in German. Inputs as well as presentations and seminar papers can also be held / written in english.
