After successful completion of the course, students are able to make an architectural intervention in the current network of archives in New York City. This may involve new modes of archiving or reconsidered approaches to existing archival practices. Students are not given one strict design task - rather, the motivation for each student's specific approach must originate from identified problems and opportunities in the existing group of archives in NYC.
The studio will involve research - both into archival practices and to the urban fabric of NYC, as well as architectural design that responds to these research observations.
The course will begin with a survey of a wide range of archives in New York,(S of varying sizes and contents. After this research and analysis phase, students will move into the architectural design of new additions to this network of archives. These new architectural interventions must grapple with the unique urban characteristics of New York CIty. This approach will allow for a range of different strategies: the creation of new archives, the redesign or consolidation of existing archives, and so on.
The course is being co-taught with Jesse LeCavalier, an architect and academic based in NYC. Jesse will come to Vienna for a 2-3 day workshop the week of March 18-24. Students are asked to maintain some schedule flexibility this week. The course will also have an excursion to NYC from April 5-10. Participation in the Excursion is mandatory to complete the course. Please email sherman@gestaltungslehre.tuwien.ac.at with any questions.
The course will have a final review presentation in early July
