After successful completion of the course, students are able to...
… to develop an independent, critical position in the contemporary architectural discourse and to consider building-relevant questions as an integral part of their architectural concept // … to formulate intelligent architectural arguments (conservation of resources and sustainability criteria etc.) and understand and use them as the source for design processes // … to convert conceptual and structural design ideas into an architectural project: architectural design, high-tech project development in all scales up to design details // … to develop constructional solutions for specific, experimental challenges // … to provide future-oriented answers to central social issues
In the summer of 1982, Carol Dunlop and Julio Cortazar drove from Paris to Marseille in their VW bus “Fafnir”. The route on the Autoroute du Soleil can generally be covered in 6 hours. Dunlop and Cortazar need 4 weeks. Every rest stop is visited and explored, no one is left out. Minimum length of stay: one meal. Overnight stays are spent at every second rest stop. Both of them are members of an expedition: Autonauts on the cosmo orbit. The transit route, basically just a by-product of satisfying another longing (the sea), is here declared to be the place of the possible itself. The zone of inattentiveness is checked for reserves and the undiscovered. It is probably one of the most beautiful suggestions in literary history for a change of perspective. (Dunlop, Cortazar. Die Autonauten auf der Kosmobahn. Suhrkamp. Berlin 2014)
The city of Vienna is to us what the cosmo orbit is to the Autonauts, and architecture is to us what Fafnir is to them.
STAYCATION wants to find and name potentials in public urban space in order to then create accessibility. STAYCATION has the architecture as a tool: daily pleasure infrastructures are local suppliers who promote holidays at home with their program. As a stand alone or parasite, they are subject to structural engineering processing and appreciate a good detail. The scale of the project is a question of the location to be chosen.
