After successful completion of the course, students are able to recognize and reflect on connections and relations in urban and architectural production and transformation processes in the city of Paris.
Participation in the excursion is for now only possible for participants of the integrative design course "EXISTENZMAXIMUM radical:common".
Paris is the densest city in Europe and is undergoing a dynamic transformation process - especially against the backdrop of a rapidly increasing demand for housing and (climate)policy-motivated adaptation measures. Derelict, underutilized, or externally dedicated areas are becoming central urban development zones: Zones d'Aménagement Concerté - ZAC. At the same time, massive efforts are being made to transform public space: the reduction of parking spaces, the expansion of the cycling infrastructure and an intensive greening of the city are intended to have a lasting impact on the mobility behavior of the population and make the city more climate-sensitive.
Above all, however, the provision of adequate affordable housing is becoming a challenge that we want to investigate. A very diverse urban population with a wide income gap, immense tourist flows, preparations for the 2024 Olympics and the already highly dense urban structure create difficult conditions for this urgent task.
We thus see Paris as a real laboratory, where the also otherwise familiar problematics such as commodification of housing, gentrification, social challenges and upheavals emerge more intesively and dynamically.
Through city walks, office visits with discussions, and field trips to relevant projects, the essence of architectural and urban development will be explored and reflections will be made on its importance for the further development of the city of Paris.
