After successful completion of the course, students are able to develop their own architectural position and to take into account the constructional interrogation in building design as an integral part of their architectural concept.

The simultaneous elaboration of the aspects of architecture, statics and building construction within an architectural design from the typological conception, urban context to constructive and structural details

Based on the development of innovative structures, structural design and details, a complex building task is elaborated. In addition to the structural and architectural design and taking into account the aspects of prefabrication and building feasibility, it is important to design a coherent energy and building technology concept as well as a resource-saving project.

Ringstrasse des Proletariats 2.0

Public space is a basic requirement for urban life. – The loss of gross-area and quality as well as the misappropriation and commercialization needs to be opposed.

The “Ringstrasse des Proletariat” was conceived as a political alternative to the “Ringstrasse” in Vienna, which is understood as a place of upper-class representation. “On February 1, 1923, the Vienna City Council, which was meanwhile dominated by social democrats, passed the “Wohnbausteuer” (housing tax) and started the first municipal housing program. Between 1919 and 1933, Vienna erected a total of 382 city owned residential buildings with almost 65,000 apartments. The highest concentration of these municipal buildings can be found along “Margaretengürtel” - on the so-called "Ringstrasse des Proletariat” (ring road of the proletariat). (1) The aim was the construction of healthy and decent housing for the working class. Their quality of life was mostly catastrophic, the working week often had seven days, a working day often 15 hours. The external, architectural appearance of the surprisingly monumental buildings reflects less the contemporary architectural style of modernism than a new relation of power in Vienna at the time. For comparison: Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919, which is known for its avant-garde of classical modernism.

The elongated strip of green space along the “Gürtel” from Gaudenzdorfer Gürtel to Matzleinsdorfer Platz has considerable potential to upgrade the immediately adjacent quarters. A future-oriented urban development concept, an improvement of the social, cultural and ecological microclimate of the adjacent quarters should be aimed at and a high quality of use should be achieved. The existing green and traffic artery should therefore be treated as a cultural and social artery. Architectural stents are to be placed at neuralgic locations along the “Gürtel”, which will enhance the respective district. The structural interventions should be conceived as a strong socio-cultural statement. In connection with a well-engineered optimized building structure and a resource-saving and future-oriented energy concept, the architectural structure should enable spacious, functionally open spaces with a high quality of use and adaptability to future needs.

The building brief is not given in detail, but needs to be developed and adapted in conjunction to its respective location. The brief should contain multifunctional and adaptive spaces in a 3-dimensional space continuum.
